White Strawberry

White strawberries (Pineberries/Alpine types) need full sun, well-draining rich soil (amended with compost), consistent moisture (about 1 inch/week), and mulch (straw) for moisture/weed control, plus pest/bird protection; plant shallowly with the crown above soil, and feed with balanced fertilizer or compost, harvesting ripe fruit daily to prevent rot. Keep water off leaves to avoid fungus, and protect from late frosts with covers or straw. 

• Sun: Full sun (6+ hours) for best berries.
• Soil: Rich, well-draining loam, pH 5.8-6.8; amend with compost before planting. 

• Planting: Spring or fall; crown just above soil, roots covered.
• Watering: Keep soil consistently moist (1 inch/week), ideally with drip irrigation to keep leaves dry.
• Mulch: Use straw (not hay) to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep fruit clean. 

• Fertilizer: Heavy feeders; use balanced or organic fertilizer or top-dress with compost.
• Runners: Pinch off runners on day-neutral types if you want more fruit; remove runners from June-bearing types after harvest.
• Pests/Birds: Mulch helps; use slug bait and net plants to deter birds. 

• Overwintering: Cover with straw in late fall and rake off in spring as new growth starts.
• Frost: Protect young plants from late frosts with covers or row covers. 

• Pick ripe (often white/creamy) berries daily to prevent mold and attract fewer pests.
