Calendula care is easy: give it full sun (or afternoon shade in hot climates) and well-drained soil, watering consistently until established, then less frequently. Avoid over-fertilizing to encourage blooms, deadhead spent flowers for more blossoms, and pinch back early buds for bushier growth, allowing it to reseed for future seasons.
Light
  • Full sun is ideal, but in very hot areas, some afternoon shade helps prevent wilting and improves flowering.
Soil & Water
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, average to rich soil; avoid dense, wet soil to prevent root rot.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; mature plants need only occasional watering, but keep soil moist, not soggy.
Feeding & Pruning
  • Fertilizer: Generally doesn't need much; too much (especially nitrogen) leads to leggy plants with fewer flowers.
  • Pinching: Pinch off the first few buds to encourage branching and a bushier plant.
  • Deadheading: Pinch or cut off faded flowers to promote more blooms and prevent self-seeding.
Harvesting & Pests
  • Harvest: Cut flowers as they open (half-open is perfect) for bouquets; harvest often to increase blooms.
  • Pests: Watch for aphids and slugs; use natural deterrents like insecticidal soap or Sluggo for containers.
Key Tips
  • Calendulas are cold-tolerant and can bloom spring through fall, often taking a summer break.
  • They readily self-seed, so leave some seed heads if you want them to return next year.
