Protea 'Susara' care focuses on full sun, excellent drainage, and low-phosphorus fertilizer, as these drought-tolerant beauties hate wet roots, thriving in sandy, acidic soil (or raised mounds in clay) and needing infrequent but deep watering once established. Provide good air circulation, prune lightly after flowering, and use specialized native fertilizers to prevent phosphorus toxicity, ensuring they get plenty of light for their stunning blooms from late fall to spring.

Light & Location
  • Full Sun: Needs abundant, direct sunlight to flourish.
  • Breezy Spot: Prefers good air circulation and can handle coastal, Mediterranean, or subtropical climates.
Soil & Water
  • Drainage is Key: Plant in well-draining, acidic soil; create raised mounds if you have heavy clay.
  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Established Plants: Drought-tolerant once established.
Feeding & Mulch
  • Low Phosphorus: Use a specialized protea fertilizer or one low in phosphorus; avoid standard fertilizers.
  • Mulch: Apply bark or pine chip mulch to help with soil acidity and moisture retention.
Pruning & Maintenance
  • Prune After Flowering: Lightly prune after blooming to shape and encourage bushier growth.
  • Repot (Pots): Repot annually in fresh mix to avoid root congestion.
  • Pests: Generally pest-free but monitor for common issues like aphids.
When to Grow
  • Hardiness Zones: Can be grown outdoors in USDA Zones 9a-11b.
  • Blooming: Expect profuse blooms from late fall through spring
