Spekboom care is minimal: provide it with bright light, a well-draining succulent or sandy soil mix, and water only when the soil is almost completely dry. Fertilize sparingly during the spring and summer, and prune as needed to encourage bushier growth or maintain its shape.
Sunlight
- Light: Bright, indirect light with a few hours of morning sun is ideal. It can also handle full sun or partial shade.
- Indoors: Place it where it can get at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, like a sunny windowsill.
Soil and pot

- Drainage: Use a soil mix formulated for cacti and succulents, or create your own with potting soil and sand or perlite for excellent drainage.
- Drainage holes: Ensure your pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.
Watering
- Drought-tolerant: Spekboom is very drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: Water deeply, but only when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Let it dry out completely between waterings, especially in winter.
- Avoid overwatering: Overwatering can lead to mushy stems and leaves.
