The 'Satchmo' rose is a popular and striking variety of Floribunda bush rose famed for its fiery orange-red to bright scarlet blooms. Named as a tribute to Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, it is highly valued by gardeners for its massive clusters of semi-double flowers and exceptionally prolific repeat-blooming habit from spring through autumn.
Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: High-pointed buds open into large, dense clusters of brilliant, non-fading scarlet-red petals. The color deepens into a rich crimson later in autumn.
  • Growth Habit: It forms a neat, compact, and upright bushy shrub adorned with dark green, glossy foliage. [1, 2, 3]
  • Dimensions: Typically reaches a mature height of 80 cm to 1.2 metres (though it can stretch up to 1.5 metres depending on conditions). [1, 2]
  • Forms Available: Gardeners can find it sold as either a low-growing bush rose (ideal for borders and beds) or grafted onto tall stems as a standard rose (ideal for walkways or focal point pots).
Best Growing Conditions
  • Sunlight: Needs full sun to produce the best flower count and intense coloration.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining, compost-rich soil.
  • Watering: Requires deep, consistent watering. Avoid waterlogging the roots.
  • Feeding: Needs a balanced rose fertiliser every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to fuel repeat blooms.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after each flowering flush encourages rapid fresh growth and a new wave of flowers
