Kruitjie Roer my nie
Kruidjie-roer-my-nie (Melianthus comosus or Melianthus major), known in English as the Honey Flower or Touch-me-not, is a South African indigenous plant that requires specific, yet straightforward care.
Care Requirements
- Light: Prefers full sun.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil, though it prefers a damp situation and can handle moist conditions.
- Watering: Requires regular watering for best results.
- Maintenance/Pruning: Prune hard back in early spring to prevent it from becoming leggy and to encourage new, tidy growth.
- Frost/Temperature: Prefers warm areas, though it is hardy to some frost. If hit by heavy frost, it may die back but often resprouts from the base in spring.
- Uses: Excellent as a structural accent plant or for adding drama to a garden, particularly for attracting sunbirds.

Note: The name is sometimes mistakenly associated with Mimosa pudica, but in the South African context, it refers to the aromatic,, toxic Melianthus species.
