Category:
Creeping fig (Ficus pumila) is a vigorous, self-clinging, evergreen vine ideal for covering walls or topiary, thriving in USDA zones 8-11. It requires consistent moisture, bright indirect light (or partial shade), and regular, aggressive pruning to manage its fast growth. Keep soil moist, but not waterlogged, and provide high humidity.
Key Care Guidelines:
  • Light: Thrives in dappled to partial sun, though can tolerate full sun if provided with sufficient water. Indoors, it prefers bright, indirect light.
  • Water: Prefers consistently moist soil; never allow it to dry out completely, as this causes brown leaves and leaf drop. Water roughly once a week, reducing frequency in winter.
  • Humidity: High humidity is ideal. Use a pebble tray or humidifier if leaves brown, especially during winter.
  • Soil & Fertilizer: Grows well in fertile, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Feed with a general-purpose liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer, stopping in fall.
  • Pruning: Prune aggressively in spring and summer to maintain its size and shape, as it is a vigorous grower.
  • Propagation: Easy to propagate using 4-6 inch stem cuttings, which can be rooted in water or directly in potting soil.
Maintenance Tips:
  • Climbing: The plant uses aerial roots to cement itself to surfaces, often better suited to concrete or masonry than wood.
  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, and scale.
  • Handling: The plant produces a milky sap that can irritate sensitive skin.
